BSc Construction Management with Foundation Year

The BSc Construction Management with Foundation Year creates an opportunity for students who want to effectively manage construction projects within a given project cycle. The foundation year aims at providing attainment for learners with no conventional entry requirements and familiarise them with fundamental principles in construction, project management as well as built environment practices. The fundamental goals of this programme include training students in project planning and development, resource management and leadership skills mainly in the construction industry. During the entire course, the student will receive theoretical and practical knowledge that will help her/him to succeed in the field of construction management as a manager of successful construction projects delivery on schedule and on budget.

The Foundation Year covers construction management theories, tutorials in academic skills, construction project planning, and an insight into the construction industry. By the end of the year students will be able to identify the use of construction materials, construction techniques and also be able to manage construction projects. Further along the course students will go more into detail about contracts in construction, construction technologies and green construction. The course also comprises practical projects, and possible internships, so the students are prepared for the job market upon graduation. This course is appropriate for students who intend to advance to leadership positions within construction officials or to undertake large scale construction projects or gain specialised construction construct.

Construction Knowledge: This is learned in the way buildings are planned, designed and
built.
Project Management: describes the way of organising and managing the construction
projects.
Cost and Budget: Displays the way to estimate the costs and manage the project finances.
Sustainable Building: Proposes sustainable modern and environmentally friendly
construction.

Career Preparation: Prepares the students to work as site or project manager.

Foundation Year:
Academic and Professional Skills: Concentration on study skills needed to perform at universities such as report writing, research and critical thinking skills.
Introduction to the Built Environment: Introduces the role and the regulation of the industry as well as the principles of construction.
Mathematics for Construction: Accounts for all aspects of measurement, numerical and geometrical knowledge, as well as budgetary and financial outlooks for construction management.
Introduction to Construction Technology: Covers the simplest fundamentals of construction procedures, types of construction materials and environmental factors that are involved in construction.
Year 1:
Construction Materials and Methods: Learn about the types of construction material and how they are dealt with in construction sites and how they are handled.

Construction Technology and Innovation: Find out about the new trends in the construction sector including the BIM (Building Information Modeling) and automated constructional processes.
Year 3:
Advanced Project Management: Concentration should be placed on the strategic project management, leadership of construction teams and better decision making.
Financial Management for Construction: Learn about the proper approaches to financial control in construction project sites, expenses control and budgetary control.
Dissertation or Major Project: Complete a research study or a significant practical exercise having an area of focus within construction management.

Construction Project Manager: Integrated in construction processes, this manager is responsible for meeting deadlines and budget and quality requirements.
